The Gear That Ruined My Show

Ever tried to mix a live set while your compressor just decides to stop working mid-gig — last weekend, my trusty old unit made me look like a total rookie in front of 200 people. I never thought I’d see the day when ‘live sound disaster’ could get a laugh, but the band turned it into a running joke all night. Have any of you had similar gear nightmares that ended up being funny?

I’ve definitely had my share of tech failures too, like when my mixer decided to act like it was on a lunch break mid-set. We just started making up ridiculous excuses on stage — ‘Sorry folks, the mixer’s on a caffeine break!’ Turns out, it turned the whole disaster into a punchline for the night. What’s funny is how sometimes the studio gear can be more reliable than the live stuff.

I can totally relate! I once had my audio interface fail mid-show, and we just started calling it the ‘ghost in the machine.’ We even made a joke about charging for ‘silent performances.’ It’s crazy how those moments can turn into fun memories, so I always keep a backup plan in my gig bag, just in case! @user mentioned a mixer fail, and that sounds rough, but there’s something liberating about improvising in those moments.
