Keeping feel when jumping genres

Did two sessions today — Afrobeat at 11am with a new artist and a hushed Americana ballad at 3 — and I’m curious how you reset your feel and tone that fast when the producer wants completely different pocket and attack. I went from 335 + clean Deluxe Reverb to a dry Tele through a tape sim and darker in-ears, but the mental switch is the hard part — what helps you flip the vibe between artists without overthinking?

I keep a 20-second ‘palate cleanser’: mute the mix to just click, sing the kick pattern, then play two bars with the right pick and palm mute before the take — it snaps me from Afro feel to ballad headspace fast. I also swap picks on purpose (0.73 for the hush, 1.0 for tighter interlocks) so my hand remembers the pocket. If the producer’s cool, a one‑bar drum stem count‑in helps; chasing a reference link mid-session can slow the reset.

I do a quick “pick flip”: Afrobeat gets a 1.14 and right hand by the bridge; the hushed Americana gets a.73 nylon and I drift over the neck pickup — @ggarci52’s reset is solid, but forcing the touch change flips my head fastest. Only caveat: if the room’s bright I roll the guitar tone to about 6 so it doesn’t get spiky.

I do a micro physical reset: for danceier pockets I stand and click my strap one notch shorter; for hushed Americana I sit and lengthen it so my right hand naturally softens. I also say a two-word cue before the take — “front/float” — to remind me to lean ahead vs melt back; @lbrown32’s pick swap helps, but this forces my body into the right attack. Sounds silly, but changing posture is like changing shoes — your feel follows the fit.

I rename patches to verbs: ‘bounce’ for 11am Afrobeat, ‘murmur’ for Tele+tape; quick headshift, but I still check hats once.
