Optimizing mic placement for live sound

I’ve been experimenting with mic placements for better audio quality in live settings, especially with drums and vocals. Recently, I tried a spaced pair technique at a local gig and noticed a significant improvement in clarity. I’d love to hear what others have found effective in similar environments.

I totally get that! I once used a Decca Tree setup for a jazz band, and the spatial imaging was like night and day. Just keep in mind, room acoustics can play a huge role too — sometimes less really is more. Have you tried adjusting distances between mics based on the size of the venue?

It’s interesting how mic placement can change everything. At a recent gig, I tried aorter’s technique and found that positioning the snare mic just a tad higher made a world of difference in capturing the full sound. Just remember, if it sounds good, it usually is good — unless you’re experimenting on a Saturday night.
